Pre & Postnatal Corrective Exercise

What is Prenatal Corrective Exercise?

Prenatal corrective exercise is a fitness approach tailored to the specific needs and changes that occur in a woman's body during pregnancy. It focuses on exercises and movements that aim to:

  1. Strengthen Core Muscles: The abdominal muscles undergo significant changes during pregnancy, and prenatal corrective exercises help maintain core strength and stability.

  2. Correct Posture: Pregnancy can lead to changes in posture due to the shifting centre of gravity. Corrective exercises can address posture issues and prevent discomfort.

  3. Improve Pelvic Floor Function: Maintaining pelvic floor strength is essential for both pregnancy and childbirth. Prenatal exercises target the pelvic floor muscles to reduce the risk of issues like incontinence.

  4. Reduce Pregnancy Discomfort: Exercises can help alleviate common pregnancy discomforts like back pain, leg cramps, and tight muscles.

  5. Enhance Circulation and Energy Levels: Gentle, pregnancy-safe exercises can improve blood circulation and boost energy levels, helping women stay active and healthy during pregnancy.

  6. Prepare for Labour: Some prenatal exercises focus on breathing techniques and movements that can aid in labour and delivery.

What is Postnatal Corrective Exercise?

Postnatal corrective exercise, on the other hand, is designed to help women regain strength, mobility, and fitness after childbirth. It typically involves exercises and movements that:

  1. Restore Core Function: Postnatal exercises focus on rebuilding abdominal and pelvic floor muscles weakened during pregnancy and childbirth.

  2. Realign and Strengthen: They help realign the body's posture and strengthen muscles that may have become imbalanced during pregnancy.

  3. Address Diastasis Recti: If a separation of the abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) occurred during pregnancy, postnatal corrective exercises can help close the gap and restore abdominal strength.

  4. Improve Pelvic Floor Health: Corrective exercises continue to promote pelvic floor health and may be crucial for preventing postpartum issues like incontinence.

  5. Boost Overall Fitness: Postnatal corrective exercise gradually reintroduces women to physical activity, aiding in the recovery process and promoting overall well-being.
